Tom, a native of Colorado, finished high school in Compton,
CA in 1940. While in high school he received awards as CA State High Scorer in
Basketball and CA State and National Champion, Clarinet. He received BA and MA
degrees from Whittier College, CA in 1952 and 1956 and a doctorate in
education from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. in 1973.
Tom married his wife, Norma, two days before graduation from flight school in
1943 and served as a B-24 pilot in Europe during WW-II. He retired from the
Air Force Reserve in 1972, as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Following WW II, Tom began his professional
education experiences as a junior/senior high school social studies/English
teacher followed by four school principalships in Whittier.
He joined the overseas schools in 1956 and served as a principal in
Germany and England. There
followed assignments as Asst. District Superintendent, District
Superintendent, and Area Superintendent in the European, Mediterranean and
Pacific areas. From 1966-74 he
was Deputy Director, DoD Overseas Dependent Schools, Office of the Secretary
of Defense in Washington, D.C. From
1974-77 he was Director of Dept. of Navy Dependent Schools, and from 1977
until his retirement in 1981, he was Director of DoDDS Atlantic Region with
headquarters in London. From 1986-95 he was Adjunct Professor (Comparative Education)
at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff.
He
is the Director of the AOSHS archives and President Emeritus of AOSHS, both of
which he founded in 1989 and 1995, respectively.
Norma served as Sec/Treas of AOSHS from 1995-2002.
They now live in Arizona and Kansas.
Their six children are scattered throughout the country as are their
six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
